The sudden shift into remote work in early 2020 gave employees a unique experience. Some quickly learned that they crave social activity in the workplace, while others thrived while working from home. Today, 74% of job seekers say remote work is an important factor in accepting a job. Some employees faced with returning to the office opted to look for new work with an employer offering permanent remote work opportunities. So what does this mean for employers? Should companies start adjusting to provide more remote work options?
Attract and Retain Top Talent
Qualified, reliable employees are currently seeking remote work opportunities. This means you have a chance to attract and retain top talent simply by providing work-from-home options. Good employees learned they were valuable, whether inside an office or through online tools that connected them to their coworkers, managers, and customers. Employers are now part of a national, if not global, workforce.
Foster Job Satisfaction
A CNBC survey of workers last year during the pandemic showed that remote employees reported a workforce happiness index of 75 out of 100. In-office employees were only at 71. Remote employees also said they were more satisfied with their jobs at 57%, while workers who still went into the office were only 50%. Work from home employees responded positively to almost every question related to job satisfaction.
Increase Productivity
It was also not surprising to see that productivity increased with remote employees. Without the interruptions common within the workplace, many employees found it easier to concentrate at home. It includes a more convenient work environment and no commute. Many remote workers find that the lack of stress based on the commute alone was enough to keep them more engaged and work more efficiently.
Focus on Work/Life Balance
There has always been a concern about the distractions that working from home could bring to the table. And while the pandemic exacerbated some of these issues, it proved not to be as big of a challenge. And as things begin to return to normal, these aspects won’t be a massive consideration. Instead, work-from-home allows employees to be more available in their personal lives even as they commit to their professional experience.
Reduce Environmental Impact
There are, of course, many side benefits to the transition from in-office to remote work. One such consideration is the reduction of the organization’s environmental impact. There is reduced overhead, of course, but this includes lower energy costs, no commutes, and less office waste.
