Take Breaks
Part of the reason we struggle with burnout is that we’re not particularly good at taking breaks. We often feel like we have to push through to get something over with, but there will always be another task just ahead. Instead, taking breaks gives our brains a chance to recharge so we can approach our work with a clear mind.
Disconnect
When you’re not at work, leave your work behind. We also struggle with being disconnected. Having access to our work email or communication channels on our smart phones, it can be easy to check in and see if anything is going on. But when you’re off the clock, you shouldn’t give in. Set boundaries and disconnect when you are off the clock.
Focus on the Meaning
Do you remember why you started down this career path in the first place? What did you like about it? What did you imagine yourself doing with these skills? What were your long-term career goals? Sometimes staving off burnout is as simple as re-engaging with your reasons why.
Care for Your Mental Wellbeing
Self-care isn’t about bubble baths and wine nights. Self-care is about understanding your personal needs to remain healthy and happy. Whatever boosts your mental wellbeing, be sure to add that into your daily routine. It can be meditation, mindfulness, exercise, nature walks, reading your favorite books, or anything else that helps you stay balanced.
Find a New Opportunity
Sometimes, even after all of this, you may find that you’re still not happy where you are today. It’s okay to decide that there is a different path for you in the future. Start to evaluate what that might look like for you and what steps you need to take to get there. Write out your goals. Fill in the gaps of experience or education you need to move forward, and make a plan.
